Cornus kousa ‘Chinensis’ is a fabulous large shrub or small tree rewarding with multiple seasons of interest and an exquisitely elegant habit.
Multiple tiers of horizontal branches are gracefully clothed in dark green, pointed leaves. From May to June, the branches are covered with masses of creamy white bracts, composed of four broad sepals with a central green button. The bracts fade to pink as they age. After flowering, plump, strawberry-like fruits develop which are highly decorative. The autumn foliage colour is outstanding, delivering a blaze of fiery oranges, reds and purples. With spectacular form, flowers, fruit and autumn foliage, Cornus kousa var. chinensis really earns its place in the garden and well deserves its RHS Award of Garden Merit.
