Corylus ‘Rode Zellernoot’ is an old variety dating from 1887 that is valued for both its ornamental and productive qualities. It is distinguished by its large, handsome leaves which emerge in May a rich wine red before turning bright purple and then maturing to green with bronze tints in summer. From late summer to autumn, it produces abundant crops of nuts, around 2cm in diameter, encased in purple husks. From January to March, Corylus ‘Rode Zellernoot’ provides further interest with its display of long pink catkins which provide early food for pollinators. It makes an excellent addition to wildlife gardens, planted as a productive hedge or as a stand-alone specimen. Partially self-fertile, it produces the best crops when it has at least one different pollination partner including wild hazel. Height: 6m (20ft) Width: 4m (13ft).
